How You Will Contribute
The Coordinator of Academic Engagement, Special Projects is responsible for supporting academic programs planned for A Nation of Artists, an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts featuring works from The Middleton Family Collection that trace the evolving story of American creativity across three centuries. This position will serve a broad and diverse range of undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and pre-professional audiences by helping to envision, organize, and support learning opportunities (workshops, academic convenings, gallery lessons/tours, et al.).

How You Will Contribute
The Coordinator of Academic Engagement, Special Projects is responsible for supporting academic programs planned for A Nation of Artists, an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts featuring works from The Middleton Family Collection that trace the evolving story of American creativity across three centuries. This position will serve a broad and diverse range of undergraduate and graduate students, recent graduates, and pre-professional audiences by helping to envision, organize, and support learning opportunities (workshops, academic convenings, gallery lessons/tours, et al.).
Specifically, you will:
- Assist in organizing an emerging scholars symposium (currently planned for Spring 2027), marking the final months of A Nation of Artists, in collaboration with colleagues in American Art, the audio-visual team, and other departments across the institution.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of other academic programs, including technical workshops, professional development opportunities, colloquia, symposia, et al., responsive to the needs of Philadelphia’s academic community.
- Deepen or develop outreach strategies with area colleges and universities around A Nation of Artists.
- Lead gallery lessons for academic audiences in A Nation of Artists as needed.
- Plan, develop, and implement activities related to A Nation of Artists for the museum’s internship and fellowship programs, especially workshops, seminars, and other programs that contribute to learning and professional development.
- Track expenses and evaluate programs to review effectiveness.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your background and experience include:
- A bachelor’s degree in art history or a related field.
- Previous experience working in museums or an academic setting (preferred).
- Familiarity with undergraduate and graduate student audiences (preferred).
- The ability to coordinate and contribute to multiple projects simultaneously and to work independently on assigned tasks.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with multiple constituencies, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and solid computer skills.
- Ability to work evening and weekend hours as needed.
Position and Compensation Details
- The salary for this position is $46,059.
- This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and 35 hours per week.
- This is a term position, ending December 2027.
- This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.
- This position reports to the Associate Director of Academic Engagement
- This position is required to be performed fully onsite at Philadelphia Museum of A
- Physical requirements:
- Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
- Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
