How You Will Contribute

The Editor is responsible for the editing and project management of individual publications covering a wide array of topics and in both print and digital formats. Editors manage the publication process from initial manuscript development through substantive and copy editing, proofreading, and finalization of the content. The Publishing Department produces several books a year, with an emphasis on scholarly collection and exhibition catalogues.

Working with the Director of Publishing, Production Manager, and the author, the Editor shapes the content of a given publication, develops project schedules and works closely with other authors, curators, designers, photographers, production staff, translators, and other freelancers to keep the project focused and on schedule.


Specifically, you will:
 
  • Serve as the editor and project manager for individual books as assigned by the Director of Publishing. Participate in concept and manuscript development; responsible for substantive and copy editing, rights clearance, consolidating and communicating design feedback, proofreading, and blueline approval.
  • Track deadlines for assigned projects and work with the Production Manager and Director of Publishing to adjust and troubleshoot as necessary.
  • Prepare materials for assigned books for copyright and CIP registration, and assemble promotional materials for distribution partners and internal marketing and communications staff.
  • Actively share information about book projects with other relevant museum staff, including coordination of editorial guidelines with the Editorial and Graphic Design Department as necessary.
  • Serve as the Publishing Department representative on the development and maintenance of a museum-wide editorial style guide.
  • Participate in strategic conversations with other Publishing Department staff about the Publishing program, and implement specific initiatives as assigned by the Director of Publishing.
  • Manage and edit web labels for the museum’s collection web pages, collaborating with curators and other editors in the Editorial and Graphic Design Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Your background and experience include:
 
  • BA in art history or English required; MA in art history, museum studies, or English preferred.
  • Minimum three to five years of editorial experience in art-book publishing; museum, trade, or university press experience are all desirable.
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and the creation and implementation of editorial style sheets required.
  • Individual must be highly organized, detail oriented, self-motivated, and a creative thinker/problem solver, with the ability to multitask and manage complex schedules.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and Outlook is required.
  • Proficiency in foreign languages a plus.
  • Proficiency with electronic editing using PDFs and with website content management systems is desirable; familiarity with TMS, Photoshop, and InDesign is a plus.
  • Experience with digital publishing strongly preferred.
  • Must be flexible and able to work independently to meet rigid deadlines.
  • Must have meticulous attention to detail and well-developed organizational talents.


Position and Compensation Details
 
  • The salary for this position is $68,367.
  • This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and 35 hours per week.
  • This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.
  • This position reports to the Director of Publishing.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
  • Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
