Collections Assistant, European Painting and Sculpture

How You Will Contribute

The Collections Assistant works with and supports curatorial staff in the management, care, utilization, and development of the Museum’s extensive and world-renowned holdings of European Painting & Sculpture and the collections of the Rodin Museum. This individual works under the direction of the Head of the Department of European Painting and Sculpture and in cooperation with other members of the museum’s curatorial staff to achieve the mission of the institution and its strategic objectives.

Specifically, you will:

  • Work cross-departmentally to ensure that the works of art in the department are properly documented, photographed, conserved, stored, and effectively displayed in the museum’s galleries for the enjoyment and education of the public.
  • Coordinate object moves to and from galleries, storage areas, and conservation ensuring all appropriate systems are updated and parties notified.
  • Support curators, conservators, and registrars in the coordination of all aspects of lending or borrowing artwork.
  • Facilitate incoming gift and purchase considerations and manages accessioning and deaccessioning processes. Assist with appraisals by outside parties and arranges for photography of incoming objects.
  • Monitor galleries, identifying maintenance needs and assisting in the scheduling of repairs, painting, and refurbishments including the coordination of lighting, labeling, security, and other logistical details for gallery changes.
  • Advance the production, accuracy, and detail of digital cataloguing records and other materials related to objects in the collection.
  • Conduct research on objects in the collection or on related topics in consultation with the Department Head, and assist in the utilization of this research for a variety of purposes.
  • Provide support for exhibitions as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Department Head.

Your diverse background includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history of art; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years’ experience in the field.
  • Familiarity with the history of European art specifically.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with others—museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies—to achieve institutional objectives.
  • Broad knowledge of museum practices in the related fields of conservation, registration, art handling, and special exhibitions.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with databases, Microsoft Office suite, and other digital tools as needed.
