How You Will Contribute

Reporting to the Associate Director of Family Programs, the Manager of Family Programs leads weekend Family Programs part-time staff dedicated to making the museum welcoming, accessible, age-appropriate, and exciting through a range of activities and opportunities designed for families. The Manager of Family Programs oversees the Art Kids Studio, a drop-in public space in the museum with art making and self-directed play that rotates thematically throughout a year based on the museum’s collection or special exhibition. This weekend offering seeks to engage intergenerational audiences, with an emphasis on children ages 3 -10 and their families, with the purpose of making strong connections to the museum’s collections. Weekend work is required.


Specifically, you will:
 
  • Contribute to the planning, preparation, and implementation of a robust range of Art Kids Studio activities, helping grow family audiences and ensure that the museum is a leading family-friendly destination in the city.
  • Directly oversee a team of part-time Program Assistants and Gallery Teachers, dedicated to making the museum welcoming, accessible, and age-appropriate. This includes hiring, scheduling, and training weekend staff in best practices of customer service and studio operations.
  • Work with the Associate Director of Family Programs to imagine and implement Art Kids, a year-round series of drop-in family programs 
  • Coordinate weekend Art Kids Studio programs as well as seasonal holiday programs for families and support the part-time staff in the execution of this programming. 
  • Support the operational needs of the Art Kids Studio as needed throughout a day
    Collaborate with the Family Programs team to develop and implement large-scale Pay-What-You-Wish Family Festivals (first Sundays of the month) and seasonal programs
  • Work alongside the Coordinator of Family Programs to develop Gallery Teacher professional development and recruitment
    Work with the Associate Director of Family Programs to manage the budget for Art Kids Studio
  • Work cross-departmentally to advocate for the family visitor experience in close partnership with Special Events, Visitor Experience, Editorial and Graphic Design, Exhibition Design, Museum Store, Marketing and Communications, and Facilities
    Collaborate with Advancement on grant/funding proposals and documentation of programs and supports a variety of fundraising efforts
    Work with curatorial and interpretation teams to find ways to make the collections, and specific exhibitions family-friendly through the inclusion of family activities and interpretation
    Attend weekly Public Programs team meeting and Division of Learning & Engagement meetings
    Other duties as assigned

Your background and experience include:
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing and leading programs that engage children, families, and intergenerational audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including public speaking
  • 5 - 8 years of experience in museum education or classrooms
  • At least two (2) years of experience supervising or managing employees, volunteers, or interns
  • Familiarity with art making materials and/or interest in art history and museums
  • Experience working with children (in formal and informal settings) and the general public
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Current knowledge around art education, museum theory, and process-art curriculum
  • Understanding of object-based and inquiry- based teaching methodologies
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting, contributing to, and supporting an equitable and inclusive culture (DEAI)
  • Ability to establish goals and metrics and evaluate and measure success and impact
  • Demonstrated planning and organizational skills. Ability to manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines
  • Knowledge and experience in audience engagement and data collection
  • Proven track record of developing and meeting budget goals

Position and Compensation Details
  • The salary for this position is $56,000.
  • This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and 35 hours per week.
  • This position reports to Associate Director of Family Programs
  • Routine evening and weekend work is required
  • This position is required to be performed fully onsite at Philadelphia Museum of Art locations.
  • Physical requirements:
    • Able to remain stationary for extended periods of time, to utilize computers and other office equipment required of this job, to perform physically administrative duties in a typical interior office environment, gallery, or exhibit space, and to access most public and staff areas of the museum campus
    • Job-specific physical requirements
    • Able to regularly set up, adjust, and operate a computer/keyboard and other office equipment used to generate work/transmit data.
    • Able to move up to 50 pounds.
    • Able to move through crowded public spaces easily for hours at a time to direct family and groups throughout the building.
  • Background check required after a conditional job offer is made. Consideration of the background check will be tailored to the requirements of the job.
