Director of Retail

How You Will Contribute

The Director of Retail is responsible for the strategic direction, creative leadership, management, supervision and control of all retail services.  This position requires a highly experienced senior executive in retail management.  The Director of Retail will have expertise in developing concepts for multiple stores and an assortment of quality products closely aligned with the Museum’s mission and brand. Extensive experience is required in managing the financial and analytic activities necessary to achieve strong profits on-site and on-line.   Works with the President and Chief Operating Officer and other colleagues across the Museum in other revenue generating departments to streamline operations and boost Museum revenue.  Currently, this position is also responsible for overseeing the final stages of design and implementation of a new Retail Store.

Specifically, you will:

  • Direct and supervise the Retail operations ensuring that operational and financial goals are achieved.  This includes ensuring proper staffing levels, sales, inventory, visual merchandising, and service are attained.
  • Create merchandising and product development plans for each area of the department.
  • Manage Museum’s retail store sales, on-line sales, corporate sales, and publication sales and distribution.
  • Oversee all merchandise selections, assortments and purchases ensuring that products reflect the collection and exhibitions, support engagement efforts, and attract visitors.  Work effectively with specialists and curators as needed.
  • Oversee all private label product development. 
  • Manage and analyze sales and inventories.
  • Create forecasts, budgets, plans, and reports.
  • Create merchandising and marketing strategies in foreign and domestic markets.
  • Direct activities of retail staff ensuring that they provide first-class retail services to visitors while encouraging enthusiasm for and knowledge about artists and artwork in the collection.
  • Negotiate contracts with foreign and domestic vendors, artists, foundations, and publishers.
  • Develop licensing programs and institutional copyright policies.
  • Responsible for department budget.
  • Participate in internal committees.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Your diverse background includes:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a museum retail environment and a college degree.
  • Demonstrated success in identifying and implementing effective innovative business strategies that increase revenue.
  • Functional expertise in the following areas: inventory management, buying and product development, planning and implementing e-commerce growth, employee management, and customer service. 
  • The ability to create effective partnerships across departments and to align retail strategies with institutional vision. 
  • Excellent planning, financial management, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Strong work ethic along with effective leadership, management, team building, and supervisory skills are needed. 
  • Proficiency in MS Suite, merchandising software, and other retail technologies.
